Biography of General Wenzhe
In the 2026 Bing-Wu Year of the Horse, the duty-holding Tai Sui, General Wenzhe, finds his historical prototype in the renowned Ming Dynasty official Wang Zhen (courtesy name Wenzhe).
Life Achievements:
Wang Zhen was born in the seventh year of the Tianshun reign of Emperor Yingzong of Ming (1463) in Dongguan, Guangdong. He earned his Jinshi degree in the sixth year of the Hongzhi reign (1493) and was appointed as a Supervising Secretary in the Ministry of War, becoming known for his integrity and outspokenness. He impeached Wang Yue, the Grand Coordinator of the Three Frontiers, for colluding with powerful eunuchs and successfully petitioned to stop the oppressive levy of 6,000 bolts of white ramie cloth in Songjiang. In the early Zhengde reign, he opposed the indiscriminate granting of official titles to palace artisans and advised against the rebuilding of the new city of Tongzhou by the eunuch Zhang Yong, both of which were timely interventions against contemporary abuses. He later served as the Administration Vice Commissioner of Shanxi, the Administration Commissioner of Fujian, and the Right Vice Censor-in-Chief. He was credited for suppressing the rebellion of Yao Tong and assisted in pacifying the uprising of Wang Haoba in Jiangxi. In the 14th year of the Zhengde reign (1519), when the rebellion of Prince Ning reached Jing-Xiang, Wang Zhen established defenses and calmed the populace with outstanding merit, eventually reaching the rank of Right Vice Minister of the Nanjing Ministry of Justice.
Divine Characteristics:
The statue of General Wenzhe is depicted with horse-like features, wearing the attire of a civil official and holding a large saber or snake-spear, symbolizing both literary and martial competence, as well as steadiness in avoiding trouble. The aura of this Tai Sui focuses on "upholding integrity and avoiding impulsivity," reminding those who "offend Tai Sui" in the Bing-Wu year to be cautious in their words and actions, to think before they act, and not to view the situation as merely a calamity. The Xieji Bianfang Shu, citing the Shenshu Jing, states: "When Tai Sui is on duty, one should be cautious in speech and action," which is precisely this meaning.
