Wealth is one of humanity's most primal desires.
From ancient times to the present, people have always hoped for prosperous lives, peaceful homes, and successful careers.
In traditional Chinese culture, the "God of Wealth" (Caishen) is not only a symbol of riches but also embodies people's aspirations for a better life. Among the many Gods of Wealth, the most well-known and influential is Zhao Gongming, the Righteous God of Wealth revered in Taoism.
During the Lunar New Year, as well as at the openings of shops and businesses, people often pay respects to Zhao Gongming in the hope of financial success and thriving business.
Moreover, in traditional culture, the worship of the God of Wealth goes far beyond just seeking money. Wealth is never obtained by accident; it is the result of the combined effects of virtue, wisdom, and opportunity.
Let us learn more about this household name, the historical stories behind him, and the profound wisdom regarding wealth found in traditional Chinese culture.
Who is Zhao Gongming?
Zhao Gongming, also known as: Master Xuantan, Black Tiger Xuantan, Marshal Zhao, and the Martial God of Wealth.
In the Taoist classic "Daofa Huiyuan," his full title is "Marshal Zhao, the Righteous and One Xuantan Flying Tiger Golden Wheel Law-Enforcer." Today, Zhao Gongming is revered as the Righteous God of Wealth, responsible for attracting wealth and blessings, promoting prosperous trade, rewarding the good and punishing the evil, and upholding the law to subdue demons.
Yet, it is little known that Zhao Gongming was not originally a God of Wealth.
From Guardian General to Chief God of Wealth
1. Taoist Guardian Marshal
Taoist literature contains various accounts regarding the origins of Zhao Gongming.
Legend has it that he practiced Taoism at Mount Zhongnan and followed the Ancestral Celestial Master Zhang Daoling. Because of his meritorious service in guarding the alchemy furnace, he was titled "Marshal Xuantan." His duties included driving away evil spirits, upholding the Taoist dharma, commanding thunder and soldiers, and exorcising plagues. Therefore, the early Zhao Gongming was closer to a majestic guardian general.
2. The Era of the Five Plague Gods
During the Sui and Tang dynasties, due to frequent outbreaks of plague, Zhao Gongming was listed within the system of the "Five Plague Gods."
The ancients believed that the occurrence of illnesses, disasters, and epidemics was related to the disharmony of heaven and earth's energy. Consequently, people would offer sacrifices to the Plague Gods, hoping to be spared from sickness and catastrophe.
With the development of Taoism, Zhao Gongming gradually transformed from a plague god into a benevolent guardian spirit, and his image shifted from fierce to auspicious.
3. Formation of the Five-Road God of Wealth System
During the Yuan and Ming dynasties, Zhao Gongming truly became a God of Wealth. With the development of commerce and the economy, people's demand for a deity of wealth became increasingly strong.
"The Investiture of the Gods" records that Jiang Ziya appointed Zhao Gongming as the "Righteous One Dragon-Tiger Xuantan True Lord of Golden Dragon and Auspiciousness," and placed him in command of four wealth-bestowing deities: the Heavenly Venerable of Treasure Gathering, the Heavenly Venerable of Precious Treasures, the Messenger of Wealth Attraction, and the Official of Profitable Trade. Together with Zhao Gongming himself, they formed the widely circulated Five-Road Gods of Wealth, signifying "bringing in wealth from the five directions: East, West, South, North, and Center."
Thus, Zhao Gongming gradually became one of the most influential Gods of Wealth in Chinese folk tradition.
What do the Five-Road Gods of Wealth represent?
Many people think the Five-Road Gods of Wealth are merely symbols for making money. In reality, they reflect the Chinese understanding of the sources of wealth: wealth does not come from a single channel, but from the harmonious interaction between individuals and society, markets, and the universe.
- Zhao Gongming: Righteous Wealth and the Foundation of Career
- Heavenly Venerable of Treasure Gathering: Accumulating Wealth Opportunities
- Heavenly Venerable of Precious Treasures: Increasing Wealth Resources
- Messenger of Wealth Attraction: Attracting Commercial Opportunities
- Official of Profitable Trade: Market Prosperity and Smooth Transactions
Can worshipping the God of Wealth really boost your financial fortune?
This is the question most modern people care about most.
From the perspective of Taoist culture, the God of Wealth is not about getting something for nothing! The true meaning of worshipping the God of Wealth is to help people establish a correct view of wealth — Wealth comes from virtue, and blessings are accumulated through goodness.
If a person lacks integrity, is greedy or speculative, or gains at others' expense, even if they acquire wealth temporarily, it will be hard to sustain.
If a person works diligently, performs good deeds, and follows the laws of nature, wealth will naturally accumulate more easily.
Therefore, Taoist wealth culture is more like a life reminder—before seeking wealth, first cultivate your virtue.
Taoist View of Wealth: Where does true financial fortune come from?
1. Accumulating Goodness to Build Virtue
The "Tai Shang Gan Ying Pian" says: Misfortune and fortune have no gate; only people invite them upon themselves.
Taoism emphasizes that good deeds can accumulate blessings. Helping others, treating people with integrity, being filial to parents, and caring for the environment are all acts of building virtue.
Those with abundant blessings often have more stable financial fortune.
2. Honest Business
Ancient money shops and merchant houses widely worshipped Zhao Gongming. It was not just to seek wealth, but to remind business operators:
Do not deceive the young or the old; provide genuine goods at fair prices.
Integrity is the most important foundation of wealth.
3. Minimize Private Desires
The "Tao Te Ching" states: He who knows contentment will not be disgraced; he who knows when to stop will not be in danger.
True wealth is having a stable, healthy, and sustainable way of life, not infinite possession. Excessive desire often leads to wrong decisions.
4. Go with the Flow
Man follows the Earth, Earth follows Heaven, Heaven follows the Tao, and the Tao follows nature.
Wealth also needs to follow natural laws. Whether in investment, entrepreneurship, or career development, one cannot do without observing and grasping the trends of the times.
5. Health is the Greatest Wealth
The body is the vessel that holds blessings.
If health is lost, even more wealth loses its meaning.
Therefore, health preservation, cultivation of the mind, and breath regulation are also important components of "wealth management."
How should modern people understand the culture of the God of Wealth?
Today, the worship of the God of Wealth is no longer just a folk custom; it is more like a cultural symbol.
What Zhao Gongming represents is not a wealth miracle brought by mysterious forces, but the wealth-building capability formed by the combination of integrity, responsibility, diligence, wisdom, and virtue.
Thus, the culture of the God of Wealth is actually oriental wisdom regarding managing life and accumulating wealth.
Harmony of Body and Mind — The Highest Realm of Wealth
Be wealthy with virtue, be noble with the Tao.
True wealth is not just the numbers in a bank account; it is a healthy body, a harmonious family, a calm heart, and the ability for continuous growth.
That the belief in Zhao Gongming has been able to spread for thousands of years and is truly respected by people is not because of the words "attracting wealth" themselves. It is the wealth philosophy he represents behind them:
Carry wealth with virtue, gather blessings with goodness;
Follow the trend and act accordingly, accumulate deep and release slowly.
When a person is capable of cultivating virtue internally and developing their career externally, wealth will naturally and quietly enter their life like a spring breeze.
